Tern Island awaits its first residents

A raft has been built at Royal Quays Marina to provide a summer home to a colony of Common Terns that have been breeding at the marina for a number of years. Marina staff have taken advice from a local ornithological expert to design 'Tern Island' which it is hoped will satisfy even the most discerning Tern.

Facilities include a surface of crushed shells favoured by the birds, a raised sill round the island to prevent Tern chicks falling into the water, shelters to protect the chicks from predatory seagulls and a ramp to enable those chicks that do fall in the water to return to the island.

The Terns' previous breeding site is earmarked for development as a Cafe/ Restaurant but its' proximity to the main marina walkway had caused problems with adult birds swooping down on passing customers to protect their young.
