Portishead Quays Marina is excited to welcome 'Odessa' owned by the recently formed Portishead Pilot Gig Club (www.portisheadpilotgigclub.co.uk).
Quay Marinas Ltd is proud to be sponsoring the club and 'Odessa' is now based at the Marina and will be a regular sight on the water and in the lock. From a standing start, Portishead Pilot Gig Club already has around 40 people on its 'learn to row' programme and will be running male and female crews for all ages. 'Odessa' is 32 feet long and the crew comprises 6 rowers and a cox.
Cornish gig rowing has its origins in the 19th century and has become an increasingly popular community activity particularly in coastal towns in the South West. Every year the World Gig Racing Championships take place in the Isles of Scilly with over 150 boats competing in the different classes.
