Between 27th May and 10th June, Cardiff hosted a stop over for the 2017/18 Volvo Ocean Race. The 7 competing VOR 65ft race yachts were on route between Newport, Rhode Island and Gothenburg before completing the race in The Hague where the competing yachts are expected to arrive on 24th June.
Blessed with superb weather, the Cardiff stop over was a huge success with the Race Village attracting over 180,000 visitors over the two week period and a huge fleet of small boats supporting the race yachts during the In-Port Race and the start of the leg to Gothenburg. The event was a massive promoter of sustainibility and clean seas with 'Turn the Tide on Plastic' being the major theme throughout.
Penarth Quays Marina was busy throughout the stop over and was able to welcome an impressive array of international visitors.
