Conservation and progress, in the form of large man-made constructions, can work together as has been shown in Bangor Marina, where a colony of Black Guillemots has taken to nesting in purpose-built nesting boxes.
The holes in the rotting timbers of the buttresses in the old North Pier provided the first nesting places for the Black Guillemots in the early 1900s. Over the years a small population became established, and it was the close contact between the Black Guillemots and people working in the harbour that gradually reduced the birds' fear of humans, and in turn increased the residents and visitors of Bangor's respect for the birds.
Today the Black Guillemots nest not only in holes in the North Pier, but also in nest boxes and holes in the Central and South Piers - indeed the population of breeding birds now exceeds twenty five pairs.
The Black Guillemots occupy Bangor Marina for much of the year, except during August and September when they are moulting into winter plumage on the waters of Belfast Lough. From October onwards they return in the early mornings only, wearing their 'ghostly' winter plumage. Visits in mid winter are brief, but by January most of the birds are moulting back to their brilliant summer plumage - jet black with a large wing patch and legs of intense vermilion.
Thereafter, the duration of early morning visits becomes longer which, together with the pre-breeding displays of the birds on and off the water, provide an un-paralleled and sometimes amusing spectacle. Normally the female lays two eggs around the middle of May and for just over a month, the male and female birds are occupied incubating the eggs. This is followed by a frenzy of activity as parent birds fly in and out of the Marina carrying butterfish for their every-growing and demanding young. The young stay in the nest holes for five to six weeks, after which they too, leave to join the adults in Belfast Lough.
The process of 'ringing' the birds has revealed that they return to breed from about four years of age, and may continue to breed for another ten years or more. By tracking the birds in this way, it has also been found that some young Bangor birds travel to other sites to nest - the Copelands, Belfast Harbour, Carrickfergus and as far as Strangford Village.
You can help the Black Guillemots by trying not to disturb the birds; do all you can to avoid causing pollution of any kind - be it from fuel, bilge water, sewage, noise or rubbish - and discourage any interference with nest, eggs or rafts of birds on the water. Enjoy the Guillemots and they will be in Bangor Marina for your children and their children to enjoy.

Be aware of Wildlife -
Shoreline habitats support a huge variety of species that can be vulnerable to disturbance.

Roaring engines, flapping halyards, loud music can disturb other users of the marina and nearby residents.
Do what you can to reduce noise pollution to a minimum.

By regularly servicing your mechanical equipment your vessel's efficiency will be optimised.
This will save engine emissions, engine noise and reduce fuel bills

Drips and spillages have a serious cumulative effect on the marine environment.
Portable fuel tanks and spare fuel containers should be filled away from the water's edge. don't overfill tanks.
Provide drip trays and absorbent material. Dispose of used engine oil within the waste oil tanks in the marina.
Paint a pretty picture -
